At first the Club made use of ex-military buildings. The hard came with the compliments of the military too – from the days when very secret things were going on on the hard.
Races were started from the pillbox (in front of Oyster Cottages) and a gun was used for the purpose. There is a story of one local resident who was not very enamoured of the race guns on a Sunday morning – and let fly with both barrels of a shotgun just after a race started.

History does not tell us whether the boats took notice of this “unofficial general recall”.
